A research engine, not a chatbot

Research with receipts.

Coleous builds a private research brain for your topic from 800+ million scholarly sources1. It then answers your questions from that material, every answer cited to sources you can open yourself. The AI is only the communicator2, never the source.

How Coleous works: from topic to cited answer in about a minute.

  1. 01

    Give it a topic

One or two words is fine. You'll sharpen it in the next step.

  2. 02

    Answer five quick questions

Coleous narrows the scope so the research fits what you actually want to know.

  3. 03

    It builds your brain

Searches scholarly databases, filters for quality, and assembles a private knowledge base. Most builds finish in about a minute.

  4. 04

    Ask anything

Answers come from the brain's sources, cited so you can open and verify them yourself.

The important difference

The AI is the communicator, never the source.

Most AI tools answer from what the model absorbed in training, so you get fluent answers with no way to check where a claim came from. Coleous separates the two jobs: the research brain holds the sources, and the model only explains what's in them.

A generic chatbot

  • — Answers from training-data memory
  • — Can't show where a claim came from
  • — Sounds equally confident either way

Coleous

  • — Researches your topic first, then answers
  • — Every answer cites sources you can open
  • — Says “that's beyond my sources” instead of guessing

Questions

Frequently asked

01What is a brain?+

A brain is a private knowledge base Coleous researches and assembles specifically for your topic. Instead of answering from generic training data, Coleous gathers credible sources, filters them for quality, and answers your questions directly from that verified material, with citations.

02What does the brain scale slider change?+

Scale controls how deep the research goes. A higher scale runs more search queries and targets more sources, producing a more thorough brain, but it takes longer to build. Scale 5 is the balanced default; scale 1 is a quick scan, scale 10 is full deep research.

03What do the brain modes mean?+

Auto lets Coleous pick the best source mix for your topic. General uses general web sources only, Full scholarly uses academic and peer-reviewed sources only, and Hybrid blends both. If you're not sure, Auto is recommended.

04What is the communicator intelligence level?+

It controls how answers are explained, from plain language with no jargon (beginner) to full technical detail (expert). Unlike the other sliders, you can change it at any time: the next answer you get will use the new level.

05Why did I get "that question goes beyond this brain's sources"?+

Every brain has a defined scope based on the topic it was built for. When a question reaches outside that scope, Coleous tells you instead of guessing. You can expand the brain with new research, or ask it to answer from what it already has.

06How do I expand a brain?+

When a question goes out of scope, choose "Expand brain". Coleous asks a couple of quick clarifying questions, researches new sources in about a minute, and re-asks your question against the expanded material. You can also expand manually anytime with "Expand with more sources".

07Where do the sources come from?+

Coleous searches Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, arXiv, Europe PMC, and PubMed, plus trusted institutional archives like IEEE, spanning over 800 million scholarly sources, alongside a curated general web search. Every source in your brain is one you can open and read yourself.

08Are my brains and chats private?+

Yes. Each brain is built for you and isn't shared with other users. Chats are saved so you can pick up where you left off. You can turn auto-save off or clear your history anytime in Settings → Chat & Memory.

The next answer you trust should come with receipts.
